All West Virginia licenses and certifications expire on June 30 of the last year of validity. The application for renewal must be submitted after January 1 of the year in which the license expires. Teaching certificate must be renewed every 3-5 years (depending on whether it is an Initial Professional Teaching Certificate or a Professional Teaching Certificate)
To renew a professional certificate, you must complete six semester hours of appropriate college or university coursework reflecting a 3.0 GPA and related to the public school program as defined in Policy 5202, unless you hold a minimum of an M.A. plus 30 salary classifications based on the awarding of a master’s degree.
You must complete the coursework for conversion after the issuance of the certificate being converted and within the five-year period immediately preceding the date of application.
