Designing Student Assessments

The ability to utilize both formative and summative assessments and the data garnered from those assessments is instrumental to success. This being the case, this course will focus on the variety of assessments used, the focus of the assessments, and the feedback that students receive on their performance.

A few fundamental areas which research supports for use of assessments are as follows:

  1. Having clear, performance-based learning goals
  2. Standards-based scoring of student work
  3. Make the process of learning visible (i.e. student presentations, skillful discussions, journals and learning logs, debriefings, interviews, and conferences)
  4. Maintain a portfolio of significant student work
